How to apply for RBP grant funding as an Auckland business
Updated: May 17
To apply for RBP (Regional Business Partners) grant funding as an Auckland business, first check eligibility — typically you need to be trading 12+ months, have $1m+ revenue, and have a defined capability project across strategy, financial management, growth, or business systems. Next, contact your regional Business Partner Network (Auckland Business Chamber for most Auckland firms) to register and complete a capability assessment. Then choose an RBP-accredited service provider whose work matches your project, agree the scope and quote, and lodge the funding request. Approval typically takes 2–4 weeks. The grant co-funds a portion of the first three months of the engagement.

Step 1: Check eligibility before you do anything else
RBP funding is targeted at established New Zealand SMEs ready to act on a defined capability project. Broad eligibility: at least 12 months of trading, NZ$1m+ annual revenue, NZ-based, and a clear capability project across strategy, financial management, growth, business systems, or sustainability. Pre-revenue startups, sub-$500k owner-operators, and businesses unwilling to implement findings do not qualify. About half of the Auckland businesses we talk to qualify on first pass; the rest either need 6–12 more months of trading or a clearer project definition before they apply.
Step 2: Register with the Auckland Business Partner Network
RBP is delivered regionally. For Auckland businesses, the regional Business Partner Network operates through the Auckland Business Chamber. Register on the regional partner's website, then complete the capability assessment — a structured conversation about where your business is, where you want to take it, and what is currently in the way. The assessment is the gateway to the funding voucher. There is no charge for registration or the assessment. The assessment also determines which capability streams you qualify for.
Step 3: Choose an RBP-accredited service provider
Funding can only be spent with RBP-accredited service providers. The network maintains a directory; you choose the provider whose specialty matches your project. For strategy and implementation projects covering recovery, improvement and growth, choose a senior advisory provider with an accredited capability stream that matches. Speak to two or three providers before committing — accreditation is the floor, not the ceiling. Fit, seniority and sector experience are what determine whether the funded engagement delivers.
Step 4 (and beyond): Lodge the funding request and start the work
Once you and the provider agree scope, deliverables and a quote, the provider (or the regional network) lodges the formal funding request on your behalf. Approval typically takes 2–4 weeks. The grant covers a portion of the engagement cost — often the first three months — capped at a per-business annual ceiling. After approval, work starts immediately and the provider invoices the funded portion through RBP and the balance directly to you. A second funding window may open in the new financial year if the first capability project is delivered cleanly.
Common follow-up questions
How much funding is available through RBP?
The funded portion varies by region and capability stream, and is capped per business per financial year. Most strategy-and-implementation projects see the grant offset a meaningful portion of the first three months of advisory work — not the entire engagement. Treat it as a co-funder, not a free service.
How long does RBP approval take?
Most applications are approved within 2–4 weeks. The slowest part is usually the capability assessment and provider quoting — once both are complete, the formal approval is faster. A complete, well-defined project description shortens the process.
Can I use RBP funding more than once?
Yes. Most businesses access funding across more than one project, subject to annual caps and a clean delivery on the first engagement. A second window often opens in the new financial year for a follow-on capability area.
What if my business does not qualify yet?
Common reasons for non-qualification: under 12 months trading, sub-$500k revenue, or an undefined project. Most of these are fixable in 6–12 months. Use the interim to clarify the project and grow into the eligibility threshold.
